About Acumen

Acumen's software streamlines processes for 280 nephrology practices and over 2,400 providers. For 25 years they partnered with dialysis organizations, hospitals, laboratories, and medical practices. They are a subsidiary of Fresenius Medical Care with an annual revenue of $5.6M.

The challenge.

In 2018, Acumen transitioned to Epic, a cloud-based EHR system. Epic is used for the medical records of over 60% of the US patient population. This migration improved the information exchange of patient records between nephrology care providers. After switching, the company needed to validate Acumen 2.0's performance. 

Furthermore, the Value in Healthcare Act was passed in 2021. This ties extra government reimbursements for medical organizations that achieve better patient outcomes. Specifically, those that enforce successful preventative care plans. To ensure value-based care, nephrologists must have access to their patients' aggregated data. This includes hospital visits, medication changes, and blood pressure readings. Acumen 2.0 is built to optimally manage and share those details while maintaining HIPAA compliance and protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

Acumen's software is used to gather patient information from different sources. They needed QA support to verify the software worked effectively on mobile and web versions. This would help providers deliver better quality care more efficiently.

Our senior engineers did manual and automated testing of Acumen's software to:   

  • Validate security and operational reconfigurability 
  • Check backward compatibility to ensure functionality with previous versions
  • Improve the performance and scalability of Windows desktop app and mobile app (iOS, Android)

We also developed an MVP with several additional features.

We completed our QA support in 2022. Acumen received the Epic Connect Accreditation in 2022 and 2023. This evaluation recognizes organizations that provide excellent user experience with best practices in Epic-powered EHR systems.
